ROW Sports Stars

Our old alma mater has produced a big number of stars in a variety of sports. A browse through Section D: The Sporting Heritage (pages 114 – 142) of Cuinmneachain serves as a reminder of our rich sporting heritage.

One of our past pupils featured there, Conor Dwyer, was capped for Ireland under 15 against England on Friday March 13th 1960 and Conor, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, has, very kindly, sent us the actual cap he received on the day as well as the programme of the match. In addition, he sent a copy of “England Football on Line” which lists the England players and the England matches against West Germany, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and ourselves. This was a very good England team and featured many who went on to become full internationals. From the results listed it appears that our lads were the only ones to give them a game as we drew 2-2. They beat all the others quite easily.

Inspired by these historic items, the PPU is looking into the possibility of erecting a showcase in the school featuring photos and other memorabilia of our sporting hero’s through the years. This is a big project because we have a rich sporting heritage in many codes. We will return to this when the school reopens in September. In the meantime, good luck to all involved in the upcoming exams and well done to school Principal, Kate Byrne and staff on another good year’s work.
